Wishful Thinking by Laura Martens

all sand was one stone once, which
isn’t true but i wish it were
you crack a pebble and scatter
the pieces and kick them as far
as you can—well done,
disruptor of harmony, you
anyway, all this to say
i buried half my heart behind
the garden shed today
under that bramble patch we never cut
weeds that bloom grow there in summer sometimes
and maybe one of the soft-eared foxes will stumble upon it
if it is curious enough
