Modern Classic by Scott Cumming

The modern classics table is filled
with geriatric titles
the authors long dead
Yet still discussed ad nauseum
for better or worse
It isn’t that nothing astounding is being written now
Just harkens back to the halcyon days
of art and the written word
When celebrity could be marked in sentences
Bandini dreams read funny now
A laugh to see somebody
pay their way round L.A.
off the back of a short story
Currency is just getting eyes on the damned things now
The things we have grown up on
barely exist anymore
Not because they are dying
but due to exclusion from
the rate of inflation
Net worth of words
stagnant for a century.
Scott Cumming never considered himself to be a writer until recently, but turns out he has some stuff to say. He has been published at The Daily Drunk, Punk Noir Magazine, Versification, and Shotgun Honey. His poem, “Blood on Snow”, was voted the best of Outcast Press Poetry Things We Carry issue and his debut poetry chapbook is due for release in December.
