I Think My Camera is Broken by Donovan Burton
c/w: implied lynching

I took a photo of the bridge,
but all I saw were rusted beams,
the still river underneath,
and a sky taken from the canvas
of a Bob Ross watercolor.
I didn’t see the ropes.
I didn’t see the fiendish grins
of the men that crafted them
to present the two lives they stole
like proud dogs with birds in their teeth.
I ask my tour guide about this discrepancy.
She has no idea what I’m talking about.
