Heaven's in the belfry of our church, up by Gale Acuff

in the attic just beneath the steeple
anyway though I've never seen it with
my own eyes, that attic I mean but dit
-to Heaven, I don't think that anyone
living ever has, not even Preacher
or my Sunday School teacher, only dead
folks do and then not all of 'em, or not
for long before their underachieving
souls get shipped down to the Devil to be
tortured and tormented--sometimes God's love
gets a little carried away and how
do I know God lives in the steeple or
right below it anyway? The answer
is I don't. But I have faith. Too damn much.
Gale Acuff has had hundreds of poems published in a dozen countries and is the author of three books of poetry. He has taught university English in the US, China, and Palestine.
