An Insufficient Soul by Robert Bulman

green slippery rocks
and an insufficient soul
leave me stranded, searching
for the stony cairns left by saints
who passed here previously
to provide sure footing
to guide my crossing
but the blackberry bramble
and untamed thicket
make me wonder
what I had hoped to find
on the other side
Robert Bulman is a professor at Saint Mary's College of California, where poetry seems to hang in the air like smoke. He was trained as a sociologist at the University of California, Berkeley, and is an emerging middle-aged poet in the Bay Area. Twitter: @rbulman
